About the Course

The Graduate Certificate in Exercise Rehabilitation for Sports Injuries will allow you to develop specialised skills in the prevention and rehabilitation of sport related injuries, assist individuals with pre-existing conditions to remain active, or assist individuals to return to sports performance. This graduate certificate provides you with specialist knowledge and skill of biomechanics, metabolic, and physiological-psychosocial aspects of the person to develop programmes and strategies for the enhancement and improved performance of active individuals to prevent potential injury or to support recovery in those who may have activity restrictions due to injury or disease limitations. The course integrates this specialist knowledge and skill to develop safe and effective exercise prescriptions and interventions.

Course Entry Requirements

An applicant must also comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

International applicants need to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must hold a Bachelor degree (or higher), normally in Exercise Science, Sports Science, Human Movement, Physiotherapy, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Kinesiology or related discipline.

  • Academic IELTS with an overall score of 6.5: with minimum scores of 6.0 in all tests.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) - 58: with a minimum of 50 in all four communicative skills
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language - Academic TOEFL Internet based total of 79: with a minimum 21 in writing, 18 in speaking, 13 in reading and 12 in listening
  • ACU English Language Test - B (65-74%)
  • Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) - Overall CAE of 176: with a minimum individual score of 169 in all tests.

If you have already studied at university level or have significant relevant work experience, you can apply for credit towards your ACU course. Credited units replace units you would otherwise study, so you can finish your course earlier.

ACU will consider requests for advanced standing based on prior studies to a maximum equivalence of 20cp.

Course Structure

Recommended study pattern

Students are required to follow the pattern of unit enrolment set out in the relevant Course Enrolment Guide, unless otherwise approved by the Course Coordinator. In all aspects of progress through the course, students will be advised by the Course Coordinator.

To qualify for the degree, a student needs to complete 40 credit points from the Specified Units in the Schedule of Unit Offerings.

  • EXSC510 Strength and Conditioning for Performance and Rehabilitation (10cp)
  • EXSC515 Exercise Presecription for Sports Injury Management Across the Lifespan (10cp)
  • EXSC651 Sports Injury Prevention (10cp)
  • EXSC669 Exercise Rehabilitation for Return to Sports Performance (10cp)

Award requirements

To qualify for the degree, a student needs to complete 40 credit points from the Specified Units in the Schedule of Unit Offerings.

Upon successful completion, students should be able to:

  • LO1. Demonstrate specialist knowledge of biomechanics, metabolic, physiological-psychosocial aspects of the person drawing on global sources of best practice and research.
  • LO2. Apply knowledge of biomechanics, metabolic, physiological-psychosocial aspects of the person in clinical decision making for return to sport.
  • LO3. Apply knowledge of biomechanics, metabolic, physiological-psychosocial aspects of the person to develop safe and effective exercise prescriptions for return to sport.
