About the Course

The Diploma of Engineering Infrastructure (Specialisation) is designed to provide upskilling for professional engineers, engineering graduates, and technically qualified staff who are interested in reskilling to pursue a career in track engineering.

Current projected national rail projects exceed A$7bn by 2027, with an anticipated workforce demand of 35,000 and an estimated shortfall of 12,000 skilled professionals.

Responding to this projected demand, this course has been developed by industry, for industry. You will learn from staff who are recognised national industry experts, and who are currently all working in the rail sector. The course content is built around the lecturer’s real-world experience, case studies delivered in workshops, group work, and discussion forums, to ensure the knowledge, skills, and confidence you gain can be applied immediately. It is the only university level rail engineering degree offered in Australia.

When you graduate, you will have gained a solid foundation in track engineering, legislation, and regulation, and have the skills to supervise or participate in the design, construction, commissioning, monitoring, maintaining, and management of rail track.

Course Entry Requirements

This course is restricted to students who have:

  • At least three years experience and current employment in the rail industry; AND
  • A Certificate III or higher in engineering or a related field.

*Students who start Semester 1 must first study the subjects TAS-JEE151 and TAS-JEE157 in Semester 1, followed by TAS-JEE152 and TAS-JEE156 in Semester 2.

**Students who start Semester 2 must first take the subjects TAS-JEE152 and TAS-JEE156 in Semester 2, followed by TAS-JEE151 and TAS-JEE157 in the next Semester 1.

Award requirements

Satisfactory completion of 8 subjects, as required in the schedule, within 2-3 years from commencement.

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate complex infrastructure engineering problems using technical expertise and STEM principles in a range of known or changing contexts.
  2. Develop and design infrastructure engineering solutions that are practical, cost-effective, sustainable and adhere to legal and regulatory requirements for a range of industry contexts.
  3. Apply ethical and professional conduct to technical operations that support the delivery of infrastructure projects, from planning and design to construction and management.
  4. Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including clients, industry experts, and team members.
