About the Course

The Diploma of Construction Management offers an opportunity for people working in building and civil construction to upskill and seize the opportunities arising from Australia’s significant housing and infrastructure projects pipeline.

The program is suited to people who have relevant construction industry experience and are looking to upskill into roles with additional functional requirements and higher levels of responsibility. The program is also suited to employees within city councils and government, utilities, and engineering and architectural firms who are looking to develop professional skills in construction project management.

Course Entry Requirements

  • Current employment in the construction industry; AND
  • Partially completed an undergraduate course at Diploma level or higher (or equivalent). You must have completed at least one subject of study (equivalent to 12.5 UTAS credit points) at 100 level or higher and which may include 100 level subjects completed in the UTAS Diploma of University Studies. If you have failed any subjects, your application may be subject to further review before an offer is made; OR
  • Completed the UTAS University Preparation Program (or an equivalent qualification offered by an Australian University).

Course Structure

Recommended study pattern

For students undertaking full-time study the following study pattern is recommended. If students are undertaking part-time study, we recommend that students complete all first year compulsory subjects prior to completing elective subjects to maximise success.

Completion of 6 core subjects from the schedule below: (students are required to select core subjects in following order)

Semester 2:

  • TAS-ZAX105 Stakeholder and Risk Management in Construction
  • TAS-ZAX106 Construction Project Management
  • Choice of 2 Discipline Elective
    • TAS-ZAA132 Managing People
    • TAS-ZAA133 Financial Decision Making
    • TAS-ZAA140 Lean Thinking
    • TAS-ZAS231 Quality Management

Note: If students enrol in two units per semester, we recommend students enrol in TAS-ZAX105 and TAS-ZAX106 in different semesters.

*Additional Information

For part-time students, we recommend students enrol in two subjects per semester, starting from the top line:

Semester 1 commencement - TAS-ZAX101 and TAS-ZAX103

Semester 2 commencement - TAS-ZAX105 and Discipline Elective

Award requirements

Satisfactory completion of 8 subjects, as required in the schedule, within 1-3 years from commencement.

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  1. Apply problem-solving and decision-making methods to design solutions to complex construction project problems.
  2. Identify and evaluate continuing professional development and learning needs to monitor personal progress and performance outcomes.
  3. Analyse and apply contemporary project management methods, regulations, standards and business processes to support the completion of construction projects.
  4. Describe and communicate why professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, professional accountability and an awareness of contemporary construction management practices are vital in project management.
  5. Analyse and apply communication methods appropriate to the professional context to elicit, interpret and transmit information and optimise workplace interactions to deliver construction projects.
